The Guardian Angels chess club is open every Friday from 3 PM to 4 PM – provided school is open. The meetings take place in the science lab.
This school year we have a pilot project where a chess course for beginners is given for a small group of children from 1st through 3rd grade. The course follows the “Step-by-Step Method” by Brunia and van Wijgerden which is popular in Europe. Each student gets the workbook “Learning Chess – Step 1”. The goal of this first step is to teach the children the rules and basics of the chess gam

The step method is organized so that an absolute beginner can enjoy the game right away. Rules which are complicated for the children – like castling – are taught later in the course. The theoretical part of each meeting is kept to 20 minutes, leaving the children plenty of time to play chess and have fun. The registration for this pilot course is closed, since the class is full. We would still like to hear from you if you are interested in joining the chess club at a later date.
