One Book-One Read
THE ADVENTURE IS COMPLETE
Dear Parents,
I would like to extend my appreciation to you for participating in our “One Book, One Read” project and responding to our survey. The responses overall were very positive and the anecdotes were extremely amusing and encouraging.
The major goal of this project was to encourage family oral reading, develop a habit for oral reading, and hopefully to continue this habit. There are so many educational studies that overwhelmingly show that reading, at least 15 minutes a night, will increase a child’s vocabulary, comprehension, and basic learning skills. Along with the basic educational advantages, the emotional bonding of child to parent, the slowing down of families involved in so many outside activities, brings us to the reality of our busy world and makes us realize the importance of the family unit and the need for one on one time.
Click on the related document above "Survey Results". This is an item analysis report for those questions that were yes/no or multiple choice responses. 128 families responded and the most encouraging response is that 74% of our responding families have intentions of continuing the oral reading as a family. Many of you discussed with your children character development, made predictions, and listening skills were improved. Mealtime discussions increased, and some children even caught their fathers reading ahead!!!! Bravo to all of you.
I would like to thank our generous PTA for helping fund this program as well as Cincinnati Learning Links for the grant. So many teachers and staff helped and gave of their special talents and time to help make this a success, thank you.
Please continue to read to your child, even beyond the early years of their life. Develop the habit and extend it to their older years. Try reading the same novel as your Junior High child and then discussing it, create that common bond.
Again, thank you for participating in this program. Click above for a starter list of possible read aloud books to continue family oral reading.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Wendy Hillman
Update on activities that took place in the classrooms:
Mrs. Dorson-King 6th Grade LA Class - Created PowerPoint Slides depicting different events in the book. Click here to view a sampling of those PowerPoint slides.
Mrs. Pincumbe 6th Grade Science Class - Owl Pellet Dissection project. See photo gallery below.
Miss McMullen and Miss Osborne — 1st Grade Classes
Both classes joined together and worked on a project in which they had to respond to the book by analyzing the characters using Who, What, When, Where, and Why. They also made text-to-self connections with the book, and worked on the new vocabulary. Check out the pictures below!
Mr. Huitger 5th Grade Science Class - Experimented with electrical circuits to see how electric was produced in the rat caves! See pictures below.
