hello fourth grade students and parents mr. deal here offering an introduction to your option to join beginning band next year beginning band is for 5th graders limitations it's difficult to start band at any other time besides it's more fun to start with your friends so don't think you can wait until 6th grade it sometimes doesn't work most music stores have a band in rental lease program call any store I'm sure a salesperson person will be glad to help you here's a brief list of local stores that have a rental lease program I'm sure you can find more online so you can shop online and you can make a great purchase and you can find instruments at a great price they keep in mind if you have any difficulties with the instrument you're going to have to ship it back to that location any other online purchase you need to know the retailer and the quality of their products one year we had a student who bought a instrument has a great price at Sam's the second year she opened her case is it change colors and it very quickly falling apart at that point reputable repair shops refuse to service discounted brand instruments because I can't guarantee the work that they do on them now I recommend renting or leasing an inch for the first year to be sure of your investment some students start playing an instrument and they sometimes decide that they've made a wrong choice and they want to change instruments when you rent or lease you have the option to do this if we always talk it over with mr. do you and their parents before we make any changes there are some students who decide to drop out also please keep in mind that we can only do that at trimester changes yes purchasing saves money over renting and Leasing and I did that when my kids were beginners but I'm in the business my elder daughter wanted to be a saxophone player and she absolutely loved it until she got her those shoes in ballet from that point on she decided to focus on dance and she quit playing saxophone but because I was in the business I was able to turn it around Uncle Bob sometimes finds a trumpet in the Attic and that's a great way of getting in from your first instrument when this happens please bring the has written to Mr. Give me a chance to look it over I'll offer you an evaluation of it what it's worth and whether or not it needs repair before you student starts their work we do have some school-owned instruments in Guardian Angels inventory that are available for students to use at no lost all we do is we ask that you take some responsibility for their maintenance we also have several instruments that are just too big and too expensive for parents to invest in see mr. deal I'll be glad to help you what instruments may I choose will your best choices are flute clarinet alto saxophone trumpet and trombone we do have some on this Rich baritone and tuba but there's based on availability check with mr. deal the mister d o I want to be a drummer well if you're one of those kids Special consideration needs to be made first off we don't have drummers at Guardian Angels School we have percussionist percussionist play all the percussion instruments that are in the back of the room students rent or lease a bell kit for home practice students interested in percussion need to keep in mind that you will have double assignments one on snare drum and one on mallets your book is double thick you also have double blank 1 quiz for snare drum 1 quiz for xylophone there are limited options of these instruments will we call them limited options because they require private lessons you need to study with someone who is a professional on the instrument that you're working on oboe bassoon and Horn and also Fender bass instruments that need private lessons in addition to band class instruments not played in beginning band we have some wonderful young piano players at Guardian Angels school and I'm very proud of their work but unfortunately they don't write piano music for beginning band I've discovered that the years that a piano student makes a great band student playing on whatever band instrument that they choose instruments of reset definitely don't play in beginning band are guitar instruments from the violin family and certainly not spoken it's like banjo home practice is essential for the success of your child and usually is reflected in the grade give him a replace a practice was a good chair and a me Stander some way of holding the music book up to ensure good posture while practicing we try to encourage our students to practice not really force them our goal is to practice about 20 minutes 5 days a week ask him to play for you some every now and then they love when you're interested in their work and please try not to allow members of the family to laugh or make jokes about the funny sounds I guarantee will come out at the beginning even a good-hearted joke can be very discouraging to a young player talking about the ga Band program will beginning brand is a 5th grade thing and parents I do know that there are absolutely no after school band practices during 5th grade the band grade is injured on the report card in place of what you used to see as a music grade at the end of the first semester and that's in jail a written evaluation will be sent home I sit down and listen to the kids play and let you know how they're doing this is when we consider changing instruments course there are rare cases when we know early does the students having insurmountable difficulties with their instruments but we try to wait until after the Christmas concert to change beginning band will perform in the Christmas concert and the spring concert after beginning band we have a 6th grade band that performs in Christmas and spring concert as its own group by this time we figure we're committed to ban and we're going to stay with it concert black and white dress is required in 7th and 8th grade we continued headband classes but we're encouraging students to pass the five-part ga band test by the time they get to be in 7th grade once they become a g a band member concert black and red and the Reggie a band shirt is required after school on Tuesdays attendance is not required is that the student let me know if they can't make it JJ's group is a challenging group of top musicians that meets after school on Thursdays from 2:50 to 3:55 students in GA Lauren jazz style the more importantly they learn how to improvise jazz solos there are many opportunities Beyond guardian angels for our band students many of our students audition for and perform with the omea district 14 junior high honor band and the honor jazz band or 7th and 8th grade students also participate in junior high solo and Ensemble comp and we've had many students perform with the Cincinnati use Wind Ensemble great jazz players and some for formulas CCM Jazz explosion off and we have the opportunity to have a recording session GA band student graduates annually earn band scholarships from mcnicholas high school Define part g a band test that I mentioned earlier any student from any Gray who completed the first book is eligible eligible to take that band test there are five parts and they're usually past one at a time truly outstanding music we've had musicians who pass all 5 farts are promoted to the G a band no matter what grades are in those students are asked to meet after school with the g a band group on Tuesdays from 2:50 to 3:55 if this student 5th or 6th grade band member they're asked to perform in both bands in band concerts how do parents keep track of assignments look in the students band book at the top of a page and look for a recent date that's the most recent assignment this is probably given to your child during class and that's where they should be practicing but unlike most classes if the student is doing well on their is there a highly recommended to move on in the book and try the next thing Christmas song books and pop song books are also a great motivating tool for the advanced student orbit instruction is highly recommended but not required the more we learn the more fun it is to play
