How the GA Band Program Works

How To Get An Instrument
Most music stores have a band instrument rental/lease program. (A sample list is below.) Call
any store and a salesperson will help you with the details of their particular store’s rental lease
program.

SOME MUSIC STORES (revised-5/6/2014) (Check online for a more complete listing of local
merchants.)

You can shop online. But consider the difficulty that you will have shipping the instrument back,
if you have a problem. Also, be careful! Like any other “online” purchase you need to know the
retailer and the quality of their products. We have had some problems with instruments from
“Sam’s” and other discount stores. Many repair shops refuse to service discounted brands
because they cannot guarantee the repair will work on those instruments.

Buy or Rent/Lease
It is recommended to rent/lease an instrument for the first year to be sure of your investment. Some students change instruments, (only after parent/teacher approval), and some students drop out. Sometimes you can find a good buy in the “Facebook Marketplace”, on “eBay” or sometimes “Uncle Bob” has an old instrument lying around the attic. If you find a used instrument that looks like a good deal, see if you can bring it to school to try out. It will be evaluated and you will learn the approximate value and whether or not it needs repair. (And the approximate cost of any necessary repairs.) Guardian Angels School has some instruments in the inventory for students who cannot afford to rent or buy their own instrument.

What About Home Practice?
Home practice is essential for the success of your child and will be reflected in his/her grade. Give him/her a place to practice with a good chair and a music stand or some way of holding up the music book to insure good posture.
More on practice: Encourage, (try not to force), your child to practice on a regular schedule.
Our goal is practice 20 minutes a day, at least 3 days a week. Ask them to play something for
you every now & then. Do not allow other members of the family to laugh or joke about the
funny sounds that may come out at the beginning. Even good-hearted jokes can be very
discouraging to a young student.
